Dr Dray’s 9 Drugstore Skincare Picks for Dry, Sensitive skin, Aging Skin above 50

Dr Dray’s Drugstore Skincare Picks for Dry, Sensitive, Aging Skin in Your 50s

If you’re in your 50s (or heading that way) and your skin has started acting differently? It is tighter, drier, more prone to stinging or redness than it used to be – you’re not imagining it. Skin naturally loses its grip on water as we age, the barrier gets a little less resilient, and the natural moisturizing factors that used to keep everything plump and calm just aren’t produced the way they once were. The result is skin that’s not only drier, but a lot more reactive.

The good news: you don’t need a luxury skincare budget to deal with any of this. I’ve been going through dermatologist Dr Dray’s latest breakdown of her go-to drugstore products for exactly this skin type and pulled together my own take on her lineup – hydration, barrier support, calming redness, protecting collagen, and gentle-but-effective anti-aging ingredients. Here’s everything, in the order I’d actually use it, with links so you can shop each one directly.

1. Cetaphil Redness Relieving Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 40

Sunscreen is the single most important step in any anti-aging routine, and this is the one I keep coming back to for sensitive, redness-prone skin. It’s a 100% mineral formula (zinc and titanium dioxide), so it skips the stinging and burning that a lot of chemical sunscreens cause as skin gets more reactive with age. It also has allantoin, caffeine, and licorice extract worked in, which help calm redness rather than just sitting on top of it. It hydrates without feeling heavy, and importantly it doesn’t sting around the eyes.

A quick note on sunscreen recommendations in general: there’s no single “best” one for mature skin. It really comes down to what you personally like the feel of and will actually use every day. This one just happens to tackle several concerns at once, which makes it a solid starting point. Dr Dray says that the best sunscreen is the one that you use every day. So, don’t overthink it and just get one that you enjoy seeing and using every single day. Here are a few of Dr. Dray’s favorites, nonetheless.

2. Neutrogena Collagen Bank 15% Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is everywhere in skincare right now, but here’s the catch: a lot of vitamin C serums on shelves don’t actually contain ascorbic acid, which is the form that’s been shown to genuinely support collagen and fade age spots. Ascorbic acid is notoriously hard to formulate with because it’s unstable, oxidizes quickly, and doesn’t always penetrate well, so formulation quality really matters here.

This one is a newer favorite of mine. It didn’t irritate my skin or turn orange the way some ascorbic acid serums can. It also includes a micropeptide the brand spent about 15 years developing, which has early clinical data suggesting it may reduce wrinkles and even help with sagging in the lower face. On top of that, there’s a polyhydroxy acid (gluconolactone) in the mix, which is great for sensitive skin since it hydrates while gently exfoliating. One bottle typically runs $15–20 and lasts about 45 days with daily use.

3. Avène RetrinAL (Retinaldehyde)

Retinaldehyde is a cosmetic form of vitamin A that’s been shown to boost collagen production, soften wrinkles, and improve the overall look of aging skin. This is the retinaldehyde product I’ve recommended the longest, largely because Avène has a strong research background and I trust the formulation. It’s moisturizing and generally gentler than a prescription retinoid like tretinoin; it just works more gradually.

If you’re wondering about using it near the eyes: Avène also makes a dedicated eye cream version. I tested an entire bottle around my own eyes with zero irritation, and afterward the skin there felt a bit plumper and smoother. I later switched to using the regular face cream around my eyes too (technically breaking the rules a bit), and irritation-wise there was no real difference. The one thing the eye-specific formula does better is stay put. It’s less likely to migrate into the eyes, which matters more than people think.

4. Differin Gel (Adapalene 0.1%)

This product is an Allure beauty winner! This is an over-the-counter retinoid; technically a drug, not a cosmetic ingredient. Originally approved for acne but with solid evidence behind it for improving visible signs of aging and fading age spots too. It also works on the backs of the hands, which is often where sun damage shows up first.

Because it’s an FDA-regulated medication, the formula is standardized, unlike cosmetic retinol or retinaldehyde products, where every brand’s version is slightly different. It’s more likely to cause irritation than retinaldehyde, but it’s still well tolerated overall and considered safe for general use without a doctor’s supervision. My rule of thumb: if you’re dealing with hormonal breakouts and want anti-aging benefits at the same time, reach for this. If your skin is very sensitive and acne isn’t part of the picture, retinaldehyde (like the Avène above) is probably the gentler choice.

5. RoC Hydration+Hyaluronic Acid Face Cream

This is my night cream pick, and honestly, if you did nothing else in your routine except cleanse and apply this, you’d already be in decent shape. I consider it a dupe for the famous (and famously expensive) La Mer cream, the biggest difference is that this one skips the fragrance. It runs around $20 a jar, which is a fraction of the luxury price tag.

It has hyaluronic acid to help make up for the natural moisturizing factors your skin isn’t producing as much of anymore, plus marine and algae extracts – the same category of ingredient La Mer is famous for. It works beautifully on the face and neck, and you can even use it around the eyelids to soften small dehydration lines. It’s a real workhorse for dry, sensitive, mature skin.

6. AmLactin Daily 12%

Now we move to the body. Lactic acid at 12% or higher has been shown to actually improve epidermal and dermal thickness, which translates to better water retention, firmer skin, fewer wrinkles, and help with the skin-thinning that comes with age. It can sting a bit going on, so it’s mainly a body product for me.

People always ask if it’s safe for the face. It can be used there, but go slowly, patch test on a small area (like just in front of the ear) for a few nights first. And no matter where you apply it, sunscreen is non-negotiable, since lactic acid and other AHAs increase sun sensitivity. Also avoid it right after shaving or on any skin you’ve been scratching, since it will sting.

7. Gold Bond Crepe Corrector (a.k.a. the “Crepe Eraser”)

Gold Bond has become such a staple in my routine that I have two products from them on this list. First up: the crepe corrector is a fragrance-free, urea-based rich moisturizer that can also be used on the face. Urea helps with moisture retention and gentle exfoliation, and this formula also contains a variety of peptides that may support collagen health (take that with a grain of salt, as these are cosmetic claims, but they do seem to help with moisture retention and smoothing out fine dehydration lines).

It also contains CoQ10 (ubiquinone), an antioxidant that gets into skin easily and naturally declines with age and sun exposure so applying it topically may help defend against the environmental factors that speed up aging and worsen sensitivity.

8. Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol Overnight Body Lotion

The second Gold Bond pick, and this one comes in the same box as the crepe corrector if you buy the pair together (usually under $20 for both). This is a body retinol, great for reversing visible sun damage on the chest, upper arms, and shins. It also contains urea and niacinamide, which support the moisture barrier and help address glycation, the yellowing of skin that comes from a combination of sun damage and aging.

I’ve used this on my neck without the irritation I sometimes get from other retinoids in that area, which says a lot given how sensitive neck skin usually is. My suggestion: use the retinol at night and the crepe corrector during the day if you want to use both.

9. Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair Ointment

Last but honestly one of the most underrated picks: your feet. Dry, cracked heels become a real problem with menopause in particular. There’s even a clinical name for it (keratoderma climactericum). This is the product that actually moves the needle. It combines urea and salicylic acid in a petroleum jelly base, which breaks up built-up, rough, dry skin and has real staying power once applied.

Use it after a shower, then cover with socks so it doesn’t rub off and can really absorb. It’s also great for the skin around your nails, since the petroleum base limits moisture getting up under the nail and reduces brittleness. One caution: it’s intensive. Nightly use for about a week is fine, but after that I’d scale back to once or twice a week as using it every night long-term can actually cause blistering, at least in my experience.

Wrapping Up

Here’s how I’d actually build this into a routine:

Morning: You may not need to cleanse first thing if your skin isn’t oily, that’s more of a rule for oilier skin types. If you are using the vitamin C serum (#2), apply it first, then follow with the sunscreen (#1). Between the two, you’re getting solid hydration built in already.

Night, sensitive/non-acne skin: Cleanse to remove the day’s residue, then apply the Avène RetrinAL (#3), start just a couple nights a week and build up to nightly as tolerated. Follow with the RoC Hydration cream (#5). Honestly, if you only ever do the cleanse-and-RoC step, you’ll still be in good shape.

Night, acne-prone skin: Cleanse, apply a pearl-sized amount of Differin (#4), then follow with the RoC Hydration cream (#5) to offset any dryness or irritation from the retinoid.

Body, at night: Try the Kerasal foot ointment (#9) right after a shower while skin is still damp, then socks on. Use nightly for about a week, then taper to once or twice weekly for maintenance. The Gold Bond duo (#7 and #8) can go into your regular body routine, crepe corrector by day, retinol overnight formula at night.

One last thing: none of this is “mandatory.” If you’re not ready to dive into retinoids, that’s completely fine, you’re not going to undo your skin by skipping them. But if you do want the extra support, this list should cover pretty much everything: hydration, barrier repair, redness, collagen support, and gentle exfoliation, all without needing to spend a fortune.
